Not so SMALL

I recently completed a study on a book entitled Knowledge of the Holy by A.W. Tozer. It is an awesome book and I highly recommend it. I love how the book gives you an idea of what God is like, but even better is that it gives you an idea of what God is not like. As the book explains, it is highly important that we have a better understanding of what God is like so that we may approach him in the right way.

I've been thinking a lot lately about the different ways we as Christians approach God, but more specifically on how we approach the subject of sin. Before I go into to it I want to say by no means am I pointing the finger at anyone. There is a saying that states "When you point your finger, three point back at you." But it saddens me how we as Christians will Praise the Lord! Thank him for the countless blessings he pours out on us, and turn around and commit "little" sins and not think twice about it. And if we do think twice about it, we being human, and the kings and queens of attempting to justify our wrong acts, make up excuses. The problem is we spend more time justifying ourselves than we do truly understanding the concept of what God has done, and is doing for us.

Christianity 101 says you are a sinner in need of a savior. Jesus is that savior and he paid a price that you could never pay, even if you tried. But the story doesn’t end there, as God sustains us. So I am a sinner not deserving of anything, and rebelled against the Almighty God. I cannot increase or take away from God. The truth is he doesn’t need me. I bring absolutely nothing to the table except fear, insecurity, greed, and selfishness, and despite that, he still wants to know me. But what’s even crazier is despite that, he still died for me. Now if you grew up in the church then what I have just said is something you have probably heard a thousand times before. But the fact is if you still think its ok to lie a little, or think its ok to steal, pirate, bootleg whatever you want to call it. Then you don’t fully get it.

If you don’t get anything from this blog then at least get this part. Even if the whole world didn’t commit any acts against God, but you still told your little white lie, then Christ still would have had to go to the cross. Let that sink in for a minute. Your little white lie, your illegally downloading of media content is not as small as you think it is. Those acts put Christ on a cross. I’m not saying its easy not to sin. That would be a lie right there. But what I’m talking about is how lightly we approach the subject of sin. Can we truly approach sin in such a lackadaisical manner if we truly understood that each act no matter how small nailed our King to a cross?

Now let’s go even further with what God has done for us. We didn’t deserve to be saved but he saved us. He could have stopped there, but he didn’t. Not only did he save us, but he sustains us. Oh, how he sustains us. He meets our needs, and never forsakes us. He provides that protection and gives us a hope that is as true as Jesus himself. So here is the score card. We humans bring nothing to the table except failure, as a matter of fact we make the situation worse.

God brings everything to the table and makes everything better. He died for us, which we didn’t deserve, and he provides for us, which we don’t deserve. And we in return tell little lies, and do "small" unrighteous acts for personal gain. God loves us and above all things cares about our spiritual health. May we approach sin in the same way God approaches it. No matter how small you think a sinful act is, remember it was big enough to nail Christ to a cross.
